Ingredient labels

Interested in quality ingredient labels and meet regulations that don’t compromise your branding, budget or schedule? First, it’s important to understand what’s required of you.

Understanding regulatory requirements

Listing ingredients is a legal requirement for many products, from foods to bath and beauty goods, cosmetics and more. The FDA has published detailed and thorough guides to their regulations for various product categories. You can see the FDA’s guide to ingredients on food labels here and the FDA’s guide to cosmetics label information here. Two common rules across product categories are:

  • Product labels must show company name, address and phone number
  • Ingredients must appear on an information panel in descending order of prominence

For food labels, ingredients must sit on the same label panel as the name and address of the manufacturer, packer or distributor — these items can be on either the information panel or the Principal Display Panel (PDP). Many food and beverage brands list ingredients immediately below the PDP. For certain smaller food products, you may place ingredients on a flap if you provide clear directions to consumers on how to access the information – e.g. “See ingredients below flap.”

Food and beverage producers should make sure to review the FDA’s new nutrition label rules and changes to the PDP. We’ve published a quick rundown of these new rules here.

Different options for ingredient labels

You can go about meeting FDA requirements in a number of ways. Depending on your product, you can place the ingredient list directly on your packaging or on a label that also includes your product branding.

The most common type of product label, and ingredient label, is a pressure-sensitive label, which applies onto your product with minimal pressure and doesn’t require glue. Other popular options include:

We can also include graphics and underlays behind your text, as long as text is still easy to read. And you can bring your label to life with label embossing, premium foil stamping or other customizations — ingredient requirements don’t have to compromise your branding.
