Artwork Specs

Digital Printing Specifications

Printing digitally gives us the ability to go to press very quickly if the electronic files are set up properly. Our digital specialists are available for consultation to help you setup your files correctly the first time and prevent any delays.

We prefer vector art (Illustrator CS5, CS6) with all imported graphics and fonts. Any other files in other programs (Adobe Freehand, Adobe InDesign CS5, CS6, Quark Xpress 6.5, 7.0, Adobe Photoshop) will need conversion to be compatible with our system. In addition, we require a soft proof pdf for viewing.

All fonts must be included in the file. To prevent conflicts, it is recommended to outline all fonts.

Document setup should be set to final trim size.

Type and images must not print closer than 1/16″ to the dieline unless it is bleeding beyond the edge of the label.

If there are bleeds, they must be 1/16″ past the dieline.

Minimum type size: We determine this on a “per job basis”. We will suggest adjustments needed in order for the text to be legible.

Any imported images need to be embedded in the document.

All embedded images (EPS, JPG, TIFF, BMP, PSD) must be high resolution. We recommend 300dpi. Anything less may result in poor quality. If JPEG compression is used, please set it to maximum quality.

All images must be assigned CMYK not RGB. (Note: Digital cameras save images as RGB. These images will need to be converted to CMYK before embedding.)

Pantone colors will automatically convert to CMYK. There will be a shift in color.

Metallic colors like Pantone 877 silver and Pantone 871 gold will not have a metallic luster like traditional metallic ink. However, we can simulate these colors.

We recommend taking advantage of our digital press proof for an accurate representation of color and content.

For any other questions or comments please contact our digital specialists.

Suggested Guidelines for Flexographic Printing

We prefer vector art (Illustrator CS5, CS6) with all imported graphics and fonts. Any other files in other programs will be pre-flighted and discussed if they can be used as is or if adjustments are needed in order to work with or if they cannot be used at all.

Color printing capabilities
We can print 4/c process or spot. If there are large areas of solid color with similar color screens or gradients we may suggest separating them.

Trapping
Our standard trap for flexographic printing is .009″ that we will assign when we output the file. If film is supplied to us to be used to make plates from or if plates are supplied, we ask that the Customer follow the film spec sheet pdf that we would provide.

Rules
Reverse rule thickness should be no less than 1 pt. Rule thickness (positive, not reversed) should be no less than .5 pt.

Color Requirements

Color requirements regarding what we can print are dependent on the press the job is running on. We can run one to eight colors including a rotary screen. It is dependent on the job, varnishes, colors, etc.

FTP Information
We assign ftp folders on our site with passwords for secure transfer. They are assigned when requested by the Sales Representative.

Non-image area tolerance .0625″ to trim.

Bleeds .0625″

UPC code minimum 80% magnification, -.003″ Bar Width Reduction, Quiet zone no less than .125″ on either side of bars.

Code 128 no less than 9 mil (.009) Narrow Bar Width and use -.002″ Bar Width Reduction.

Open reverses as needed for text.

Minimum type size: We determine this on a “per job basis”. We will preflight the file and if there are concerns, we will suggest adjustments needed in order for the text to be legible.

Any imported images and/or fonts need to be sent along with the parent document so we can accurately preflight and prepare the file for printing. (Note: If running flexo, images would need to have a minimum of 1% screen in each color to ensure not getting hard edges.)
